Thorsten Hohmann is currently ranked #1 in the World. Some of the highlights of his career include 2005 BCA Open champion, 2005 European Straight Pool champion, 2004 US Open runner-up, 2004 Challenge of Champions runner-up, and 2004 German 9-ball champion.
The following is his interview with The Wizard Dave Pearson:
1. Where were you born?
I was born in Fulda, Germany. Fulda is located 70 miles north east of Frankfurt, in the heart of Germany.
2. How long have you been playing pool?
I started playing pool in 1992. The club system is very common in Germany, also in pool. Private clubs, where you pay a monthly fee and you can play as much as you want (depending on opening times) but I have a key :-), participate in leagues or championships. The first person I met when I first visited the club was Michael Wahl. He became my teacher and today he is still my coach and good friend.
3. What hobbies do you enjoy?
I like all kind of sports like (running, swimming, badminton, used to play soccer, table tennis, etc.), I like music, reading, going to the movies, hanging out with my friends, sauna
4. Typical day in the life of Thorsten Hohmann?
Depends on whether I'm at home practicing or playing a tournament....
a) At home.... get up 7am, Breakfast, meet up with my coach Michael at the gym at 8am- work out with weights and cardio for three hours, lunch at the pool club, pool practice for 3-5 hours, rest, dinner, computer and email work, free time (mostly playing pool) 11pm-midnight bedtime. b) At tournament.... always different.... depends when my games have been scheduled. During my free time try to fill it with various activities such as exercising, reading, relaxing and eating good food.
5. How old are you?
I was born July 14th, 1979.... today I'm 26 years old
6. Do you have a nickname?
After winning my quarterfinal match of the World Championships in Cardiff 2003, Matchroom actually the MC John Mc Donald gave me the nickname THE HITMAN, that’s what they call me since
7. What are your favorite movies?
I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan, so I have to mention that movie, also like Braveheart, Forrest Gump, Gladiator, Matrix and many more.
8. Favorite sports personality?
I like Tiger Woods, his charisma, hard work and what he has accomplished (just a perfect role model for any athlete). I’m very interested in successful athletes, because you can learn a lot from them and it motivates me.... also like Lance Armstrong, Boris Becker, Michael Schumacher
9. What are your favorite foods?
I like the Asian and Italian cuisine.... but the Germans can cook too.
10. What is your goal in life?
Stay healthy, enjoy life, become a person people like and respect, dedicate my life to what I love - my passion pool, try to excel every day, to take every shot as serious as it would be my last, improve my English, to give always my best in what I do, travel the world and maybe become a role model for other players
11. When you stop playing pool what would you like to do?
I could not imagine working in a regular office job. But I think I would like to study sport, sport-medicine or sports psychology. Also interested in journalism and computers.
