Magic Ball Rack
By Larry Pritchard from DE on April 3, 2014
Ordered this on a whim. Delivered quickly as everything I order from Ozone comes quickly. However this product does not work with all balls. Bar balls are not the same size as Aramith or Premium Belgian balls. I think the concept of this is great if all balls were the same size. It took too long to get a rack set up. I would not recommend this product.

Gets you more pool time for your money
By Jack from , on February 20, 2014
So I'm writing this review after buying my second magic rack(I left the first one on top of my car...). Obviously I liked it enough that I bought it again. Once you learn the trick of how to place the balls and do it quickly, it makes it really hard to go back to a regular rack in 8-ball and 10-ball.

The perfect rack every time not only lessens the hassle of racking, it lets you play more and better games. Because the rack is perfect every time you almost always end up with a superior spread when compared to a non-magic rack, allowing players to run out better, play better patterns and finish games more quickly. It gives you more for your money.

For 9-ball, the magic rack breaks in an extremely similar way every time. I think it leads to incredibly boring, easy, bland 9-ball games, and I recommend switching to 10-ball while using the magic rack.

Tight racks, but requires more care
By Tim from Atlanta, GA on February 8, 2014
How many times have you run into tables where you're constantly re-jiggling your rack just so your balls will stay still when you remove it? Too many was my answer, and that's why I went in search for this product.

The Magic Rack is a thin piece of film that rests under your desired rack (8-, 9-, and 10-ball). It has little diamond cutouts in the film that the balls will fall into and sit. The relative distances of these cutouts are such that adjacent balls will remain in contact (the key to a good, tight rack).

And, it does a great job at that. If you use and care for it correctly, you will get tight racks.

However, because its so thin, its very sensitive to pressures which might cause it to bend up when you're racking balls. For example, when I first started racking with it, I'd roll balls onto it, and then wonder why there were gaps. Rolling balls onto sometimes causes it to gently scrunch up and mess up the alignment. If you want to avoid this, try placing balls directly on it as close to the holes as you can.

Also, you definitely can't bend the Magic Rack. As said, it relies on laying flat, and any creases would prevent that. Its unfortunate that this great piece of equipment can't fit in most pools bags. I keep mine in a thick manilla document folder that I just hold with me when I go to pool halls.

Overall, a product worth trying.

tight consistent rack
By Chad from , on January 15, 2014
This product does give you a tight, consistent rack as promised. But it does take some getting used to, it is a little more time consuming than using a conventional rack. I find that I can get my racks just as tight using my oak conventional rack in a lot less time. But the product does work as promised if you don't mind spending a little extra time racking.

It really works!
By Eric from Alaska on January 11, 2014
This is an amazing thing....once you get use to it. Don't be hasty to give up on it, once you learn how to work it, you will have a tight rack and a better break.

By Eric from Florida on January 10, 2014
Thought they would work better. I would rather use traditional rack

Worth the time to learn to use these
By Will from Brownstown, IN on January 9, 2014
At first, it will take some time to get used to using these. After you get used to using them, you will be able to rack the balls almost as quickly as you would with a traditional rack Start with the front ball and work your ball back row by row. The last ball that you set in the rack may need a little extra coaxing to get it to sit right. These will really help your break once you get used to them as you will be breaking the same tight rack every single time.

By bob from You know on January 7, 2014

Great for 9/10 Ball
By qatartime@yahoo.com from Fortuna, Ca on January 3, 2014
The 9/10 ball magic rack is great. The balls fit very snugly and you can actually practice and get proficient at making a specific ball off the break (1 ball in the side pocket). I don't use the 8 ball magic rack.

Expensive for what it is...
By Leo from Tega Cay, SC on January 2, 2014
This is a very thin piece of plastic with holes. The description states that it offer minimal interference. This is true a high speed when when a balls rolls slowly over this rack it does interfere with the play. If you are picky about this, even a small interference will impact your satisfaction with the product.
Also, if no balls are over the rack after breaking, it can be easily put away... but if a ball ends over it or even in the middle of it, then it is hard to remove without moving the balls. I found this also an inconvenience.
It does hold the balls tight when you use it correctly, but the price is way too expensive for what is is...

First time buyers, if you're skeptical, just try it. These things make pool better.
By Matthew Lala from Washington, DC on December 6, 2013
Most players these days are familiar with magic racks but if you're not, and you're on the fence... just try it. This is a reasonable price to see if you like it or not.

Having perfect racks every time never gets old, and it's not slower than regular racking, it's actually faster because a regular rack takes forever to get perfectly tight. If you don't usually take that time and you're used to settling for "good enough" then you might as well not shop for racks and just stick to whatever lousy wooden things they use at the pool hall.

But if you care, and especially if you play 9-ball, these things will become your best friend.

Yes, a ball can roll off if it is moving very slowly over the rack. But 95% of the time the rack can be removed and the other 5%, if a ball is on it, players can just agree to lift that ball a millimeter and slide the rack away.

This thing solves one of the oldest problems in pool and it's cheap and lightweight. Your biggest problem will be trying not to lose it since it's easy to overlook.

By Nicole from Claremore, Oklahoma on November 23, 2013
We gave this set away as part of a package for the winning bar during our last league. Everyone has liked it as far as I can tell. I know they use it often, and love the idea of a consistent rack. I know we definitely haven't heard as many complaints about 'loose racks' since they have started using it.

Magic ball rack
By Arthur from Philadelphia, PA on October 11, 2013
This rack is way above all other means to rack nine ball. I have never seen such action with about a medium hit before. If you use your regular speed on this rack, making three to four is not uncommon. Takes a few more seconds to rack, but so what. Worth the time.

the ball rack works
By jeremy from PA on October 1, 2013
it works. balls are tight. only minor complaint, is that the plastic template creases very easily. It is also grossly over-priced. I can't imagine how much markup there is on this product. Considering the cost, they should ship a bunch of these for $16.

Great 9 ball rack
By Evan from , on September 14, 2013
I was pretty skeptical that this would work but after reading all the reviews I decided to give it a try. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised.

The 9-ball rack is a great product. The balls are easy to line-up and you get a great consistent rack every time. The rack rarely impedes the flow of the balls. It is also easy to get the balls to stay in place once you do it 3-4 times.

The 8-ball rack is not a quite as good. The reason is that with the shape of the balls in an 8 ball rack there are a lot more balls in the middle of the shape and the magic rack lightly holds balls in place on the outer edge. Is it still possible to get a great rack with the 8-ball rack but getting the balls into their spots is a bit more tedious.

Good Racking
By Randy from Daphne, Alabama on July 8, 2013
This racking system is somewhat tedious at first but with a little practice, and making sure that you put the correct corner on the foot spot, it is easy to use. When this rack is filled all the balls are touching and the balls scatter nicely with a good hit on the first ball. I ran 12-14 racks last Friday and the balls cleared the rack every time allowing me to remove it. Even if the rack is not cleared on the break balls seem to roll over it without distortion. I've only use this rack for those 12-14 games but I enjoyed using this rack and plan to continue using it.

Interesting Rack
By David from , on April 8, 2013
If you follow the instructions you will get a tight rack but will get tired of how long it takes to set up. I found a sure way to rack with this in no time. Rack the balls in the normal rack behind the magic rack, lift the wood rack slightly so the balls roll over the rack within the confines of the wood rack then stop the point of the rack once the first ball gets to the point of the magic rack. The rest of the balls should follow and set right where they are supposed to. Take the wood rack off and touch the sides of the balls to make sure they are all frozen. It works great with this method, tight every time.

9 on the snap
By Nayef from , on December 10, 2012
This product takes out the effort, and possible error, of having a loose rack. It is great, and assures a perfect rack every time; i love it. The only downside to it is that you are unable to carry it in your case i.e. fold it, because that would probably damage the rack or the way it sits on the table. If they can come up with a way to make it easily mobile, then the package would be complete.

I would recommend this item to a friend.

Perfect!
By Stanley from Norcross, GA on November 30, 2012
After struggling with several wooden eight and nine ball racks, I purchased a set of these. Absolutely perfect rack every time! You would think it is slower to use these versus a conventional rack, but not the case. Conventional racks take a lot more time jockying balls around trying to get them tight. Additionally, these racks will provide perfect tightness even when the table has small amounts of chalk and other debri present, something that is not possible with a conventional rack. Awesome, I'm a lifetime customer starting now!

I am very pleased with the Magic Ball Rack Set- I find myself pocketing balls on the break now more often than before- now that the balls are racked much tighter I am more confident with my break- the only problem is that the 8 ball rack has a slight bent at one of the angles which probably occured during packaging or shipping but it's not that serious-

It costs too much to send back so ill take it as a lesson learned. s&h was expensive i thought for a letter size envelope. $8.

Used over 250 times now
By Skippy from St. Louis on August 6, 2012
I purchased this to use at a bar I play casual and league 8 ball at because of the wear on the table and the frustration with trying to get a good rack after seeing it used on ESPN during professional matches.

I waited until I used it 250 times before reviewing and I can say this is the best rack ever. It does take a little getting use to, but after I have racked with it many times I can say that it certainly saves time over the usual system because you dont have to keep trying to get the balls tight and no one needs to "tap" balls which causes further damage to the felt.

Some people are hesitant to use it, but if they are playing me and I am racking then it is used in every casual game. League games I ask and I am yet to be turned down and they always like it. I even challenge them to find 2 balls that arent tight. Some try, but never do. Besides if professional players (ones that make lots of money playing pool) have no issue using it, then whom am I to say my play is more particular or precise than theirs?

After much use I have found the best way to rack it is like this: 1 ball, then the next 2, after that put the 8 ball in place and rack the 2 outside it. Then the 2 middle followed by 2 ends. Then work you way from left corner to the right corner on the final row. I am OCD so I rack by # and color order with the 7/15 always in the middle and the 1/9/14 always the top 3. If your first 6 balls are not in place right, it complicates the rack but it is still very easy.

Rarely is a ball left on the rack because of a poor break and rarely does a ball end up getting interfered with by rolling over it. Never have I seen it do it in a way that is detrimental to the spread of balls. If one or 2 are on it after all balls stop, lifting just enough to remove it is all that is needed.

The bar I play at, is getting these for all their tables and requiring them after they get re-felted here soon if that tells you anything.

Taking the extra five seconds to rack with the magic rack is worth it. You'll get the best spreads possible even if you don't have a monster break.

WOW! If you want a tight rack then this is for you. I was skeptical at first about how tight a hand rack could be, or if the balls rolling over it would be a problem, but after using it for a while I can't believe how nice it is. They rack the same every time. The ball lines behind the rack are a thing of the past so that makes less mess and wear on the table. Only takes about the same time to rack and I'm not seeing the whole developing at the spot from the head ball being driven into the table. Overall I think its great and we play for three to six hours a day on the table.

Magic rack break percentage
By Dave from Knoxville, Tenn. on May 10, 2012
We have been using the magic 9 ball rack for about 5 months now. I bought one for my son for Christmas and he liked it when using it on his table.
I then purchased a couple for myself and my ball on break percentage went up to 80 to 90% in 9 ball. This was from about 40 to 50% in the past with a Sardo rack where all the balls looked tight.
The 8 ball rack is definetly not as good. This is why I only gave a 4 star rating. The 9 ball rack is definetly a FIVE star product. There are several balls that will not get tight in the 8 ball rack and there was no increase in break percentage vs a Sardo rack.
Vs the regular wooden rack both 8 & 9 ball racks are superior with the 9 ball rack standing head and sholders above that.
Note in the picture of the 8 ball rack the small gap between the 14 and 8 balls.
This occurs in about 4 places when they are racked, always in the same places, and there is nothing you can do about it.
The 9 ball rack is totally frozen together and the balls explode when they are hit properly.

Tight Rack for 9 Ball
By Jon M from Southbridge MA on February 15, 2012
We started to use these in our league and the amount of better racks and less asking the drunk people to re-rack because they can barely walk is awesome (we are allowed to rack our own as well in our league). 15 Second setup is pretty good time once you get use to it and in nine ball honestly if you have a good break 95% of the time there is no ball left on the rack, anyone who complains either has a problem breaking solidly or is drinking while playing pool (not that its a bad thing just try racking sober once and see the difference).

My second set of these...
By Paul from Henderson, NV on January 11, 2012
I ordered these as a backup to the originals. Admittedly, they took some getting used to at first, but the adjustment was quick and I wouldn't want to use any other rack. They are great!!

Review what headline? I never understood this question.
By Norman from Glen Burnie, MD on December 27, 2011
Don't waste your time or money. You have to be very careful with this thin plastic rack. It is not easy to use. It certainly takes several racks to get use to. I have racked them with a space between the balls and had to rerack. The trick is to put the second and third ball on the rack to hold it in place, put the head ball in place and then rack the rest of the balls if you want to try it. Be very careful with storage and handling. I just had to try it out of curiosity.

Magic Ball Rack - 8 Ball and 9/10 Ball Rack Set
By Charles from , on December 5, 2011
Was quite disappointed the first and only time I tried these racks - Not because of any fault with the racks - but because the balls available at the Senior Center where I play are apparently neither the correct size nor even the same size. Am prepared to purchase new set of balls today. (From Ozone billiards of course.)

almost perfect
By Ron from New Jersey on November 17, 2011
The rack does work if...........all the balls are the same size. The claim that the rack does not interfere with the movement of the balls does not hold up in practice. Slow rolling balls are definitely affected. Other than that and the fact that it takes a bit longer to rack over a traditional triangle it is still a good idea.

Perfect rack every time
By Ryan from Dallas, TX on November 10, 2011
It takes a little getting used to but it works very well. I like not having to worry about loose racks at the pool hall any more.

Nice but odd ball movement
By Ryan from Dallas on October 25, 2011
I plan to use this in the pool hall so that my opponent must provide a tight rack. At home I found that the balls roll unpredictably when they roll over it. You are supposed to remove it after the break, if possible, but they are times when moving the rack will interfere with balls on the table. I recommend removing the rack and replacing the balls, but obviously this could cause issues in money games.

Consistant snug rack

Excellent product, just difficult to carry in a cue case.

Not for me
By Matt from Poolville, TX on October 15, 2011
One of the biggest problems with this is on my very first break it came up off the table and interfered the ball travel. The other problem is it is time consuming to rack the balls. I don't know how they come up with 15 secs but it required some finesse to get all the balls in the right place.

Slow to set up
By Christopher from Marietta, GA on October 10, 2011
They do work as advertised. However if you are playing many games back to back with friends, they take way too long to set up. They do hold the balls in a very tight rack and I didnt have any issues with them slowing the play of balls after the break. Only a few times that a ball would come to rest on top of them after the break. Where you would have to wait for a few shots to move them.

Magic Rack Sets

Magic Ball Rack - 8 Ball and 9/10 Ball Rack Set

Tight? Damn Right!
By Mike Steffen from Marshalltown, IA on September 14, 2011
Just got one of these and I must say I am IMPRESSED. Every ball in the rack is touching its adjacent partner every time you rack. Every rack is consistently tight. It is amazing. The plastic is so thin that there is very little interference when balls cross over its surface. Myself, I remove the Magic Rack as soon after the break as I can. A minimal investment with big returns. Get one!
